Human settlements on this planet earth have been divided into two different and distinct categories; based on number of people housed; density and intensity of population and profession into which population living therein is involved and engaged, Housing larger number of people in a limited area coupled with high density/intensity of population working in the domain of industry and service sector, remain the distinct characters of the urban settlements. Whereas smaller number of people; having low intensity/density of population with majority of population engaged in the primary sector and agriculture, makes the settlement rural. While Urban settlement has precise definition, but rural settlements remain defined by exclusion.
